Learn To Spin Kit

Learn to spin the fun way! Most people start with a simple spindle, a good book, a little wool, and a friend.

Your kit will include the spindle(s) requested, the book signed, and 2 ounces of wool -- one ounce of a natural color wool roving and one ounce dyed pencil roving.

This is the current version of the kit that was recommended by Abby Franquemont in 2007, author of the 2009 book Respect the Spindle.

Productive Spindling covers the basics and adds everything I know about spinning with top whorl, bottom whorl, and Turkish spindles. It contains the learn to spin material previously sold under the title "Spindling: The Basics" and then some!

The top-whorl spindle, The Bellwether Spindle, is a good starter weight, at 1.6 ounces. The whorl is machine cut and hand-turned to dish out the top for rim weighting (= longer spin time). The shaft of the spindle is 11" sanded birch, and the hook is bent and balanced for spinning. If you'd also like a 1 ounce toy wheel spindle for finer spinning, I've added an option for that, too! 1 ounce spindles are good for finer yarns, so if you're just starting out, you may "graduate" to the lighter spindle after a month or three of spinning thicker yarns.

These spindle kits each include at least 3 ounces of roving good for a beginning spinner, usually in a variety of colors. Not necessarily the fibers or colors shown here. I try to include a variety of natural and dyed colors.
