Kundert Spindles are wonderful, functional works of art. As Steve Kundert says, why not spin your way from a troubled mind to peace of mind?
Steve Kundert is well known for his marvelous spindles. His whorl shape may even 'take flight' with a fast enough spin. The unique shaped shaft lets you wind a center-pull cop as you spin -- simply slip the cop onto a knitting needle and start pulling from the center, or even plying from both ends!
The designs turn into interesting circles of color as they spin. Mr. Kundert's fancy designs keep getting lovelier. His Ring design carves out a circle of the underlying wood to show through the upper layer. The Wave and Pinwheel have graceful curves of two woods. His newest designs include the Twist, the Albuquerque, and more -- stay tuned for these in our next shipment (expected in November)!
Technical specifications:
hook style: square/diamond,.43 gauge stainless steel wire
spindle length: 10 1/2 inches, hook top to shaft end; about 8 1/2" below the whorl
whorl width: about 3 3/8 inches
whorl notch: at 3 o'clock
shaft: about 3/8 inch diameter at whorl, tapering to 1/4 inch diameter at end; decorative turning at end
weight: ranges from 0.9oz/25gr to 1.6oz/45gr
All Kundert top whorl drop spindles are turned as a complete unit (whorl glued to shaft prior to turning)– thereby insuring the best balance possible. On these spindles, the weight of the spindle (in ounces) is written on the shaft next to the maker's mark.
Shafts are most often Walnut; Maple or Cherry shaft spindles are available from time to time. The tapering lets you slide your cop off and have a center-pull cop ready to go for plying. Cool!
As with all spindles from The Bellwether, these come with a pouf of fiber for your immediate spindling enjoyment.
